40 years of changing lives: Volunteers like Nina are key to our success

In a typical (non-pandemic) year, Baker welcomes hundreds of volunteers – individuals and groups – to our facilities. Volunteers play a vital role at Baker Industries, working side by side with our program participants to assist, encourage, listen, and support them as they prepare to take the next positive step toward permanent employment and independence.  A regular volunteer since 1991, Nina Zodtner still gets inspired by the spirit and friendliness of the people she meets at Baker.

As a Special Education major in college, Nina was introduced to the challenges faced by adults with disabilities. Nina describes the “tremendous feeling of self-worth and fulfillment” that a regular work opportunity at Baker creates for hard to employ adults in our program.

According to Nina, the friendly atmosphere and acceptance people experience at Baker make it easy to connect.

“I’ve made true friends here,” says Nina, pictured at left with long-time friend Kathy. “I love talking and listening to stories about people’s lives,” notes Nina. “I admire their willingness not to give up.” For the dozens of participants who have worked with Nina through the years, her friendship and acceptance have made all the difference! Thank you, Nina!
