A few weeks ago, we said goodbye to Louise “Weezie” Baker, the visionary co-founder of Baker Industries. In the days since her passing, we have reflected on her extraordinary contributions—not just to our organization, but to the countless lives she touched.
Baker Industries began with a mother’s love and determination. When Weezie and her husband, Charlie Baker, saw their son, Justin, struggling to find meaningful employment as a young adult with a disability, they refused to accept the limited options available to him. In 1980, they turned their Chester County garage into a small work program, creating a space where Justin and others facing similar challenges could build skills, earn a paycheck, and find a sense of purpose.
Weezie once said:
“We built Baker because we believed that everyone deserves to work. That belief started with Justin, but we quickly saw that there were so many more people out there who needed a place like this.”
As Baker Industries grew, so did its mission. In 1988, the Bakers expanded to Kensington, broadening their reach to include returning citizens, individuals in recovery, and those experiencing homelessness. Weezie believed that work had the power to heal, restore dignity, and transform lives. She fought to create opportunities for those who had been overlooked, showing by example that with the right support, people could rise beyond their pasts and build brighter futures.
One of her guiding principles was:
“We focus on the ability, NOT the disability.”
That belief shaped the culture of Baker Industries. Weezie knew the names and stories of the people who came through the doors—she listened, encouraged, and believed in their potential. One former participant shared:
“Weezie was the first person who ever really saw me for who I was, not for the mistakes I had made. She gave me a chance when no one else would.”
Even now, her impact is everywhere. It’s in the success stories of those who found a fresh start through Baker. It’s in the messages from participants whose lives were changed because of her belief in them. It’s in the continued strength of our community, the dedication of our team, and the work that happens in our facilities every single day.
As we celebrate Baker Industries’ 45th anniversary this year, we do so in her honor. The foundation she built is strong, and we remain committed to carrying forward her mission—not just in memory, but in action.
