Why is Baker Unique?

Addressing a Real Societal Need

  • We take "unemployable" segments of the population and not only employ them but help them to be productive enough to support our business.
  • We provide a safety net for a population that social policy often fails to reach. We do this by creating a sense of family, and a social environment in which our employees learn and thrive.
  • We guide our employees through re-assimilation into the mainstream by helping them find housing, clothing, and necessary documents.

Real Work for Real Wages is Good Business

  • We "teach" the skills of work ethic, achievement and productivity in a real work environment.
  • Workers are paid a real wage, not a piecework rate.
  • We have won Vendor of the Year honors from our customers and received much recognition for quality work and timely delivery.

Off Welfare and Into the Workforce

  • We "graduate" employees to our own management staff. Currently some 70% of our staff are Baker program alumni.
  • Though we lose our best people every day-because they find work outside Baker-we continue to maintain high standards on behalf of our customers, and high expectations for our employees.
  • While working at Baker, our employees pay over $300,000 each year in taxes.

No Government Funding

  • We neither solicit nor accept government subsidization. Seventy five percent of our operating budget derives from the work we do. The rest we raise privately.
  • Our method of funding gives us a level of independence that government-funded work rehabilitation programs do not enjoy. We are free to modify our work strategies in the way that best suits our customers-and our workers.
