Weezie and Charlie Baker receive the "Legacy Award for Exceptional Achievement"
On Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at the tenth annual meeting of the Chester County Community Foundation, held at West Chester University, Weezie and Charlie Baker were presented with the first ever Legacy Award for Exceptional Achievement. Community Foundation President/CEO Karen Simmons notes, "The Foundation established these new awards to commemorate its first decade of philanthropy. These people have donated time, talent and treasure to the communities in which they live and work. Their good works have left an indelible mark on their communities. They mirror our mission to connect people who care with causes that matter, so their legacies make a difference in Chester County."
In presenting the award, David M. Frees, III, Esq., Chair of the Board of Directors of the Chester County Community Foundation stated:
"The Bakers have devoted 23 years of their lives to the creation and building of Baker Industries, and they have done so for essentially no compensation. With their energy and ingenuity, in 1980 the Bakers created an appropriate working environment for their epileptic, learning-disabled son. But they didn't stop there. Several moves and many expansions later, this modest nonprofit enterprise has grown to include a work site in Malvern employing 75 people and a location in Philadelphia employing more than 100 people. This includes the hardest-to-employ homeless people, and those recovering from drug and alcohol problems."
